  1. "The Spotlight Finds Jason Wu" profiles the new fashion designer Jason Wu, with a captivating hook that introduces him as the designer who made Michelle Obama's inaugural gown. The introduction beings with Jason Wu ordering a slice of pizza while watching history being made as Michelle Obama attends her husband's inauguration wearing the dress he made. This hook gets the readers attention and right away implies the simplicity and normalcy this fashion designer possesses, even though he is a contributor to American history. The author explains that Jason Wu is an important upcoming designer, who will be influential in the fashion world and his dress will be in the Smithsonian Museum. The author provides lots of details about Wu's life. His background is very interesting, including how he displayed his talents for sketching and eye for fashion as a young child in Taiwain. We also learn that he attended Parson's School of Design, and did graduate. Interestingly enough, once Wu's gown was used at the inauguration, Parsons shared with the world that Wu was an attendee at the college. The author most likely learned these details through an interview or watching interviews of Wu. Overall, this is a very well written and descriptive profile.

  2. The profile on Jason Wu focuses on the emergence of a young designer as a result of Mrs. Obama’s inaugural gown choice. The profile begins as a flashback to Wu ordering a pizza, waiting to see what gown Mrs. Obama’s would choose for the presidential inauguration. I think this a fairly good start. It makes me interested in reading to find out his reaction and the after effects. The profile continues with the interview being conducted the next day and Wu reflecting on his emotional high of the previous night. The author does not directly state why this profile is relevant; rather he uses Wu’s success to speak for itself. The author used prices of Wu’s work, location’s it can be bought, and a story of making Mrs. Obama’s inaugural gown, as reason to connect Wu to a current audience. Wu’s work is present in fashion society today, is worn by some of our favorite celebrities, and can be found in our local high-end department stores. Details about Wu’s life include his early love of fashion when growing up in Taiwan. He later moved to Vancouver, British Columbia, and Massachusetts. My favorite detail is that his mom used to drive him to wedding dress stores so he could sketch the designs in the window. The author learned these details of Wu’s early life through the interview conducted with Jason Wu, himself. I suppose some of the information was available online, however, it is more likely the personal information about Wu’s early life came from him.

  3. This story starts off with telling the story of how Jason Wu became who he was. He had submitted a design for Michelle Obama to wear to the Inaugural Ball. This story starts off with Jason ordering a pizza and waiting for his life to change watching the Ball on T.V. Yes; I think this is a good start to the story, because it tells the reader, that your life could change in 1 minute. The author tells you the relevance of the story when he talks about the new fall line that Jason Wu is designing. The author talks about the history of Jason Wu’s career, and his path of having Michelle Obama wear his dress to the Inaugural Ball. The author says lots of details about Jason Wu’s past, and the people that have helped him along the way. Some of my favorite details are of Ms. Goldman, and her role in jump-starting Jason Wu’s career as a young designer. I think the author learned these details from interviews, and research done on how Michelle Obama chose her dress.

  4. "The Spotlight Finds Jason Wu" is an article in the NY Times that profiles up-and-coming fashion couture designer Jason Wu. This article starts out describing the scene leading up to the climax of this young prodigy's career. He sits on a couch with his boyfriend, eating a slice of pizza he had just ordered from Dominos, with the TV set to the Presidents Inaugural Ball. I think this is a fantastic beginning because it shows the audience that he is just like everyone else. Normal people eat pizza from Dominos and watch TV. It interests the reader to keep on reading because it starts out very nonchalant. However, when you read on just on more sentence, we see that Michelle Obama is wearing the gown that Wu designed. This snippet of news has just changed the way that Jason Wu viewed American history forever-he is now a part of it. This gown will be placed in the Smithsonian Museum for all to awe and gawk at. This is why the article is prevalent now, because our current first lady is wearing the dress, and it is now available for all to see. The details in this article deal with the details of Wu's life. He grew up in Taiwan, where his parents ran an importing-exporting business. He attended a preparatory school in Massachusetts, and later on furthered his education in Connecticut. Some of my favorite details however, were the details about his whimsical clothing line, and how he became hooked to fashion at just 5 years old. He is a budding fashionista, and his designs are now being housed at Bergdorf Goodmans, which is one of the most renowned department stores in the world. The author probably found out this information by conducting an interview with Wu, or simply looking up biographical information on the web.
